Rubber Bath & Shower Mats Increase Safety for Elderly

If you have an elderly parent, or grandparent, you no doubt worry about their safety especially if they are living in their own home, away from immediate help should something happen. You worry about accidents, and you want to make their home as safe as possible. You may be surprised to know that a simple rubber bathtub mat could be the most valuable investment in your loved one’s safety.

Bathrooms are notoriously unsafe, in many cases, because they combine smooth, often slippery floors with water. Anyone could slip and fall in the tub or shower, or on the bathroom floor. When you add a little imbalance from age, the bathroom becomes a treacherous place for your elderly relatives.

One of the first things you should do, of course, is install a rubber shower mat or bathtub mat, and grab bars in the tub if there aren’t any. These two steps can make getting in and out of the shower and tub much safer for your parent. Keep in mind that bathtubs and showers are slippery by nature, that hot water can lead to lightheadedness, and that elderly people are not always as secure on their feet as they used to be. By putting protection in the tub or shower, you bring safety to your loved one.

Still, there remains the bathroom floor. For obvious reasons, most bathrooms are not carpeted, and the smooth flooring usually chosen for bathrooms is treacherous when wet.

One way to make sure that your parents are safe in the bathroom at all times is to put rubber floor mats on the bathroom floor, creating a safe path from the door all the way through the bathroom. This way, whether a small amount of water gets splashed on the floor or the toilet overflows, your parent has a safe rubber walkway in the bathroom.

By putting down rubber bathtub mats, rubber floor mats, and installing grab bars to help your parents avoid a fall, you’re improving their environment and keeping them safe.
