Everything You Need for the Complete Yoga Experience

If you’ve been thinking about trying yoga, or have been doing yoga for a while but are interested in going farther in your practice, finding the best supplies for your yoga practice may be a challenge. Finding yoga balls, yoga mats and mat cleaners, and less common yoga supplies like wedges and sandbags can be difficult, but having the best equipment will make your yoga practice go much more smoothly.

When purchasing yoga mats, in particular, it is important to make sure that the mat you choose will hold up under stress. As you get more involved in yoga, you will be spending more time on your mat, and a thick, non-slip yoga mat will make your practice easier and more enjoyable. The best mats are sticky enough to keep you from slipping, and thick enough to make your postures more comfortable by providing sufficient cushion between the floor and your body.

When people who don’t do yoga see the term “yoga blankets,” they may wonder why bending your legs around your neck requires a blanket. However, when you practice yoga regularly, you will find that some of the postures work better with a rolled-up blanket, and in some stationary postures, a covering blanket makes you more comfortable and more able to relax into the posture.

Yoga supports such as blocks, wedges, sandbags and blocks can be much easier to work with than improvised items. When you purchase yoga blocks and other supports, be sure to buy solid blocks that will not “squish down” under your weight; good blocks, whether cork or foam, will support your weight comfortably without sagging.

Yoga balls, also known quite simply as “exercise balls,” are used not only in yoga but in Pilates and other exercise routines to help strengthen muscles. Many people who’ve never tried using a yoga ball may think it’s a fairly easy piece of equipment to use, but once you’ve experienced ball exercise, you’ll really appreciate how it contributes to your fitness.

As you expand your yoga practice, and particularly if you go to a class or practice with a group on a regular basis, you will find other accessories useful, particularly a mat bag, which makes carrying your bulky mat a matter of simply stuffing it in a bag and throwing it over your shoulder. You may also find an eye pillow leads to greater relaxation and enables you to sink deeper into certain postures. Yoga straps are also quite useful for certain postures.

Practicing yoga is, for many people, a lifelong experience, and by finding and using the right props and accessories, you can make your practice a much more enjoyable, and productive, part of your life.
